About Vicki Hyatt: Community-Driven Leadership

I firmly believe that good government matters. However, I also know that an engaged, passionate community can accomplish vital initiatives that government entities simply cannot tackle alone. It is time to build a bridge between our leadership and our citizens. By meaningfully aligning our efforts, we can build a stronger, more collaborative future for all of Haywood County.

Why I Am Running for Haywood County Board of Commissioners

I have the time, the deep-rooted experience, and a relentless drive to serve our community. This campaign reflects my core philosophy on public service, transparency, and local government.

Why Am I So Involved in Our Community?

Some people wonder why a candidate for Haywood County Commissioner spends so much time attending community meetings, talking with nonprofits, partnering with business owners, and organizing local activities. For me, deep community involvement is the exact reason I decided to run.

After decades of covering our local area as a reporter and editor, I thoroughly understand the nuts and bolts of county operations. I also believe government cannot solve every civic challenge by itself. Haywood County is full of people who care deeply about this place. They are ready to contribute their knowledge, time, and energy. A true community leader must listen to those people, connect them, and help turn good ideas into action.

That is why I launched a community-driven candidacy based on four pillars: Listen, Learn, Connect, and Act.

The Four Pillars of my Campaign

LISTEN

Listening to residents to truly understand their concerns.

LEARN

Researching the issues and seeking out people with direct knowledge and experience.

A Different Approach to Local Leadership

My campaign for Haywood County Commissioner began by listening. After collecting more than 2,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot as an unaffiliated candidate, I immediately began talking with residents about the issues that matter most to them.
Then I went to work:

    • Researching core local issues.
    • Meeting with subject matter experts.
    • Attending community and civic meetings.
    • Consulting with public officials, business owners, and nonprofit leaders.
    • Sharing my findings through weekly community newsletters.

The goal is never just to identify problems. The goal is to explore practical, collaborative ways our community can solve them together.
Haywood County is generally well-run. I agree with many decisions our commissioners have made over the years, though not all of them. However, we can use our greatest local resource much more effectively: our people. What happens when we combine the technical responsibilities of county government with residents, nonprofits, businesses, and grassroots organizations? We accomplish more. That collaborative spirit drives my community involvement.

Values and Character

Open and Accountable
Vicki believes people have a right to know what their government is doing and why. She values transparency, straightforward communication, and public access to information.

Integrity and Independence
Vicki believes public service should be guided by principle, not personal or political favors. She rejects quid-pro-quo politics and believes campaign support should never come with strings attached. She is equally committed to focusing on issues rather than personal attacks, even when taking the easier or more aggressive political path might benefit her personally.

Kind and Neighborly
She approaches people with kindness and respect—the kind of person who believes being a good public servant begins with being a good neighbor.

Focused on the Work, Not the Credit
Vicki is comfortable working behind the scenes and bringing people together around a shared purpose. For her, success isn’t about who gets the credit. It’s about getting something worthwhile done.

Humble and Willing to Listen
She doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. She asks questions, seeks out people who understand an issue firsthand, does her homework, and works to find a responsible path forward.

A Community Builder
Vicki believes communities are strongest when people look out for one another, particularly when times are hard. She values cooperation over division and believes lasting progress takes people working together.

Curious and Solutions-Oriented
She is willing to look beyond the usual answers. That means researching an issue thoroughly, learning from what other communities have tried, finding ideas that work, and adapting them to fit Haywood County’s circumstances.
